The Narcissistic-Psychopathic Continuum: Clinical Implications

Although narcissism and psychopathy have been hot topics in the popular media in recent years, the DSM’s "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" and "Antisocial Personality Disorder" are limited and problematic sources of clinical understanding. Therapists need to know more in depth about how to help narcissistic and even psychopathic individuals as well as those who suffer in relationship with them. This workshop covers the continuum of narcissistic dynamics and their implications for clinicians.

Nancy McWilliams, PhD, LP, is Emerita Visiting Professor at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology and maintains a private practice in Lambertville, NJ. She is the author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis (1994, rev. ed 2011), Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999), Psychotherapy: Psychoanalytic (2004), and Psychoanalytic Supervision (2021), all with Guilford Press. She has edited, coauthored, or contributed to several other books and serves as Associate Editor for all three editions of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006, rev. ed. 2017, 2026). Dr. McWilliams is a graduate of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP), her works have been translated into over 20 languages, and she has taught in more than 30 countries.
